The difference between karate, kung fu, Brazilian jiu jitsu and tae kwon do and which is the best of the martial arts!
Now, as we know fair matchups were and are not always possible and especially if you look at the past of the UFC you will see matches where a 100 to 150 pound fighter was matched up against the 600 pound fighter and so on. Nowadays there is more rules and regulations in place like there is no longer bare fisted knuckles and fish hooking and eye-gouging are not allowed. And many times there is only one flight for each fighter per night whereas in the pas,t like in UFC early days, I fighter might fight 3, 4 or even five matches in one night. And worse yet they might be matched against someone they had fought no matches that night after they had fought three or four. But stuff like not fair or even safe.
But back to the topic of discussion here about the differences between the various fighting styles in all but the most popular ones which consist of karate, kung fu, tae kwon do and jujitsu. The oldest these martial arts is obviously karate and kung fu as they can be traced back to the 15 and 1600s. Karate is based latest system of using one's body parts like their fists and their needs and their feet to fight others. Karate can work with one were three or more fighters at the same time.

Kung fu is basically all the same hard style moves in karate but they're kind of hidden in more of a flowing dance almost like a folk dance but Chinese style. The reason for this is actually quite simple fact in the 15 and 16 and 1700s in China practicing the martial arts or fighting was illegal and punished very harshly. So the practitioners in China hit it in their dances so that people watching the didn't know was going on wouldn't think they were practicing fighting techniques and that they were instead practicing a long drawn out dance.
Kung fu is basically as I said just let karate so is effective on one person or multiple attackers just like karate. Both karate and kung fu are what is commonly referred to as middle distance fighting techniques. They work best when someone is between 2 feet and 4 feet away from you. Tae kwon do is similar to kung fu and karate except that it specializes more in kicking and footwork. Basically tae kwon do is 60 to 70% kicking in 30 to 40% punching whereas cry and kung fu are just the opposite of that.
If you were to watch a tae kwon do practice or even a tournament you will see emphasis placed on jumping kicks, spinning kicks and other almost acrobatic jumps, kicks and breaks (where they break boards at dizzying heights and such). Tae kwon do's, referred to as once a longer range fighting styles. It is best for handling one or multiple attackers and is best performed at a range of four more feet. The problem with this is that tae kwon do is not a very good martial art or fighting style for close proximity or ground fighting.

Tae kwon do is not very applicable to the typical bar fight or street fight. It is however very good if there are multiple attackers involved. Karate and kung fu, being that they're pretty much the same moves just one has them a little more hidden than the other, are more closer range fighting and tae kwon do and are more applicable to the typical fighting one might see in high school or in various places, but it does have its weakness just like tae kwon do. If the fight goes to the ground most karate moves, katas and forms (patterns of karate movements and training) will be of little value or use.
This is where jujitsu or what is now commonly or more popularly referred to as Brazillian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) comes in. Jujitsu is originally a martial art from the Orient that specializes in using one's opponents strength against them in works best on bigger and larger and far stronger opponents. The Gracie's actually took the Oriental jujitsu and focused it more on ground fighting than traditional oriental styles did. This brought about the newer style of Brazilian jiu jitsu which has taken the martial arts world and Full Contact fighting by storm as it has proven to be very effective one-on-one fighting method.
In a one-on-one fight, karate kung fu and tae kwon do do not stand a chance against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and this has been proven time and time again. Jujitsu is also much talk for in training and in how long it takes for belt progression also. For instance, it is not uncommon for someone earning black belt in two years or less in karate or tae kwon do (kung fu usually takes longer and they don't usually use belts they use sashes Instead). Whereas with Brazilian jujitsu it usually takes 2 to 4 years for someone to earn a blue belt and it can take another year or two to earn a purple belt and then another year or two to earn a brown belt. This is then eventually fall by the black belt and this can take a total of 6 to 10 years on average to earn in Brazilian jiu jitsu.
Also, all belts must truly be earned in jujitsu, whereas they are usually just given out over time in karate and tae kwon do. This is why you see karate and tae kwon do dojo's everywhere, but you will see many cities that don't even have a place to take our train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You may have to instead a lot to take the more stand up Oriental jujitsu which is still more effective than karate and tae kwon do in one-on-one fighting but is not anywhere near the same caliber as Brazilian style which involves more ground fighting techniques and chokes.
Now obviously the one weakness of Brazilian jujitsu is it is not very effective on multiple attackers. This is why most people that do full contact or mixed martial arts fighting now to a more rounded training which centers around Brazilian jiu jitsu, but also incorporates other more longer or medium-range fighting styles like karate, kickboxing, etc.

So if you were to look at a fight from the standpoint of just one-on-one fighting, Brazilian jiu jitsu is the clear runaway winner no other martial art comes close. If you were to look at it from the point of more attackers than karate would probably be the more ideal martial art. So the best martial art of all is actually not anyone in particular it would actually be a a good foundation starting with Brazilian jiu jitsu and then adding another martial art straining like karate or maybe even Thai kickboxing which has become quite popular also lately.
By laying the groundwork for more rounded fighting ability or what is, referred to now as a mixed martial artist one is better prepared for any type of fight situation.
