Goal setting 101 – the art of setting goals to ensure your success

Everybody has desires to get somewhere in life. Whether it be to become a CEO of a big multinational corporation, to be a professional baseball player or basketball player like Lebron James or to become a better investor like Warren Buffett. There is no limit to what you may want to achieve or what your goals might be. But to help you get there whatever it is you want to get to you need to have goals.

Now, the first thing to keep in mind, and probably the most important part of goal setting is to make your goals attainable. That means have lots of little goals that will eventually add up to your big goals. Don't have just one massive goal, to go from the starting point to being Warren Buffett or Lebron James. The odds of that happening are like the odds of winning the Powerball lottery – you have better odds of sitting in your living room and getting eaten by a shark.

Instead put the odds in your favor. Make little goals kind of like baby steps and as you get better and as you improve more then you can make them a little bit tougher each time. Then remember to keep yourself in check as there are things that we come up against in life like this recession we have now. No one could have predicted how serious this was going to be or how long it was going to last (it isn't even over yet). So remember that outside externalities may cause you to revise your goals from time to time. That's fine there's nothing wrong with that. Just keep in mind to make your goals livable and attainable and keep your eye on the prize.

Many of history's biggest achievers became addicted to setting goals and meeting them so much so that they were attaining goals and setting goals all the way up to their deaths. Bob Hope was famous for booking events many, many years ahead even when he was nine years old. He is now being remembered with a commemorative stamp from the US Post Office for his years of helping with the morale of the US Armed Forces personnel.

The best way to set and achieve your goals is to start small and write them down. Try and memorize your goals in such a way that you associate them with when you wake up in the morning and again when you go to sleep at night and that you'll remember them throughout the day. This is where you can use the memory technique of association to better help you link and remember your goals throughout the day. The more you go over your goals the better the odds are that you will attain them.

Goals can also be used to motivate you to get further in life. For instance if you want to live in a bigger house, or a better house or even if you want to get your first house, take a picture of the ideal house (nothing to far stretched like for instance don't plan on getting a $30 million house for your first house unless your dad is a billionaire who wants to give you that kind of money). Pick something reasonable and something that interests you. For instance don't pick an ugly house just because you think you might build a fort in the near future. Pick something that you like and something you want to shoot for. Then take this picture and put it somewhere really see it every day. Putting your office by your computer. Make a copy then put it by your mirror in your bathroom. Whatever you think it takes.

By placing that picture real said it will get the good fights and positive vibes flowing in you that you can do it and that's what you're going to get when you do get your goal accomplished. If you're feeling really down someday what better way to pick yourself back up and take a look at a house just like that and say I could own this I can just get this goal accomplished. Maybe a house might be too big of a goal to start off with. Maybe instead you should use a car. Could you use n upgrade in your car? Do the same to post a picture of the car you would like or whatever else it is that you would like.

Maybe your goal is not a material item or extra earnings. Maybe it's the fact that you want to lose weight or want to learn a new foreign language. While for losing weight set of simple goals. Don't set huge goals of 10 pounds a week. Set attainable goals start with 1 pound a week. As you progress may be then if you think it's too easy to go to 2 pounds a week. It's better to succeed and find it was easy and then up the pace a little bit, then to start off too hard and fail right out of the gate.

To make sure that you attain your goals you should put a time limit on them, but be reasonable here. As I said earlier there will be circumstances and things that pop up in life that you never knew could happen, etc. so these dates and/or time limits should be flexible in case an emergency or something comes up like that. But don't make them flexible for simple, normal reasons because you will set yourself up to fail – you'll end up becoming a procrastinator and the goals will never be met.

So there you have it – goal setting 101 from baby steps anywhere you want and everywhere in between. You set the goals, you pick what it is you want to attain and start with baby steps and then it's your progression gets better take larger steps and make larger goals. If you make your goals attainable and realistic and hold yourself to them you will get where you want to go in life and more.
