Pitchmen, Billy Mays, Anthony Sullivan, Forbes Riley, Spin Gym and getting products to sale through infomercials

I don't know if you've had a chance to see it yet or not, but the new TV series on Discovery Channel entitled pitchmen is quite interesting to watch. I've seen two episodes so far and really like the program. Two of the top current infomercial pitchmen (Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan), whom are famous for products like OxiClean, OrangeGlo, The One Sweep and countless others, go around the country looking for ideas and products that would possibly make a big hit or be the next big hit through commercial television ads.

The nice thing is that they don't hold back and let people know what works and what definitely does not work. It gives viewers a true sense of what really goes on and how much work really takes place in bringing what might look like a simple device to fruition and multimillion dollar sales. Many products look great on paper and may even look great when they're produced but may not hold up when they start researching it and then when it's given its initial market test.

The show they had on today was quite interesting because they actually featured another pitch person I have to say pitch person because it's not a man its a lady - Forbes Riley and her interesting little workout device called the Spin Gym. For her product she went full bore into selling everyone on how good her product was and how much she believed her product. She's determined her product would be the next big thing I meet so big that she wanted to be next to Suzanne Somers with her infamous Thigh Master from the 80s and 90s.

Upon the initial interview Billy and Anthony Sullivan both loved the little Spin Gym. It promised a great workout from a device that literally fit in the palm of your hand and it came with aerobics DVD type workout or at least that's what it looked like. When they want to shoot the actual infomercial, they wanted to do different price points and Forbes Riley assumed that her product could sell for $29. The producers wanted to do price point of $20, $15 and even $10. Forbes Riley just about had a breakdown over of the lower price points. She couldn't understand and did not want to sell her product the Spin Gym for less than $19 or $20. Finally she relented and did the lower price point video footage.

When they want to market it they only used the $29 and the $19 price points and this ended up being fatal in the eyes of Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan. They test marketed the product in numerous locales throughout the United States and came up with basically no interest at those price points. Now according to Billy Mays and Sullivan, Forbes Riley would have been much better served with the $10 price point. To Forbes Riley it was an ego thing it was her product and she felt it as cheapening herself to have to sell her product for that little. But she didn't understand was at that price point in an infomercial there are numerous people that have sold millions and millions of products. At those numbers you get your cost of production greatly reduced and makes a serious money - not to mention becoming a household name which was what Forbes Riley wanted in the 1st place.

Well, maybe Forbes Riley will actually have the last laugh as rate after the show she became, according to Google Trends, the number one most searched keyword on the Internet. Not only that, but her product the Spin Gym became number three. Now don't know if she set up to sell the item yet, probably not, or if she has a website set up to take orders or to get e-mail addresses and stuff, but she has probably now found out that by getting the publicity from being on Billy and Anthony's show Pitchmen she may have another chance. Her publicist or manager or herself will probably be getting calls soon from other PR firms and manufacturers who want to take her product forward.

There still may be hope for her Spin Gym and this may also be followed by appearances on shows like The View, Oprah (consider to be the holy grail of marketing), and numerous other night and day shows that will be looking to feed off the same momentum for their audiences. I myself see the Spin Gym as a kind of quirky workout fad that will be short-lived and easily replaced with other better designed substitutes. Now I could be wrong and maybe she will have the hottest item of the decade on her hands. I mean look at the pet rock - who would have ever thought that someone could make millions of dollars taking rocks and painting little faces on them and calling them pet rocks?

Some infomercials feature great products that are revolutionary, high-quality and really work well to solve a problem. Whereas others can be marginal, ridiculous and even fraudulent at times. Some artists products that you can buy at your local Wal-Mart or other store and with a little twist of marketing can be made into a new hot product. Take the Slap Chop. This is a product that helps you to chop up nuts and coleslaw and other things and is not anything revolutionary as you can get a similar but better manufactured product from IKEA for nine dollars. The slap chop costs around $20. Yeah, it's promotional gimmick is that it includes a free cheese greater - whoa, those run for about a dollar or two. Is it a great deal? Not really, but the marketing is fun to watch for the first few times.

Now back to what we were talking about here - Pitchmen is an interesting show and affords people an actual look into what really goes on and how hard it is and how much money goes into bringing a product to market on TV in a short infomercial. They really give you the actual numbers like when I tell you that you need to have a chemical engineer or mechanical engineer and a taxi cost $100,000 to bring the product to the point where it can then be thought of for more final stage marketing. When you want to sell high volumes like you do on television infomercials sometimes yet to look at things from many numerous perspectives and that includes the legal perspective.

If you haven't seen it, Pitchmen is definitely worth your time it's only an hour long and will definitely change your perspectives on TV marketing and what goes on behind it and you will probably come away learning something from it. I think they picked the right guys in having Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan on the show, albeit I think really Mays is much more talented than Anthony Sullivan and appears to have more enthusiasm and energy, but they both have great insight and opinions and are interesting listen to. Check it out and who knows maybe Forbes Riley and her product the Spin Gym will show everyone that you can't always judge a book by its cover and you never really know what the future holds.

Buyers are fickle and can change their minds at a moments notice and what might seem like a dud to one person could become the greatest invention since the paper clip to another. Her product is not for me, but I think he'll be interesting to watch where does and see what she does with the publicity that she's been given and will be given in the future. The Spin Gym's future is in Fobes Riley's hands. I wish her luck and hope she doesn't make it because I like to see people when through adversity. Maybe one or product makes a big she can hire Billy Mays or Anthony Sullivan to do some of her ads for the Spin Gym?

Wasn't Forbes Riley famous for the Magic Bullet? I think she is a beautiful woman, but she belongs back pitching products like the Magic Bullet. This new product the Spin Master or Spin Gym sucks. It's like Eminem doing childrens books or Fifty Cent doing balet - its simply wrong.
