How to fix your credit report and easily dispute and remove negative information

According to numerous government agencies including the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), the ACLU, the Atty. Gen., state Atty. Gen.'s and even numerous Congressman it is a fact that upwards of 90% of all credit reports contain wrongful and even erroneous negative information. This erroneous information can make it so it's hard or impossible to obtain credit or even affect your chances of getting a decent paying job. So is very important that everyone check their credit at least once a year for release entries and also to check for identity theft and other similar forms of fraud.

As a current and for the last basically 20 years there has been basically three credit reporting bureaus in each has their own numbering system and report for you. All it takes is for one of these bureaus to have false or erroneous information and this could end up costing you thousands in higher interest charges, fees, etc. or worse. It is also a common fact now that many employers for jobs that pay $50,000 a year or more routinely do credit checks as part of the hiring process. If you have bad credit they will immediately eliminate you out of the hiring pool. So is essential that you look your credit and fix anything wrong with it.

The credit bureaus (Experian, Trans Union and Equifax) will not fix your credit report on their own. You need to look for errors and report them when found. Now the nice thing is that it's now been made federal law that you can obtain one free credit report per year and also immediately after any occurrence where you've been denied credit. So, for instance, if you have been turned down for a car loan, credit card or similar then you are allowed to obtain a free credit report so you can see why and what is wrong with your credit. The bad thing here is that the free credit reports do not include score so you really do not know much about how the negative items in their impact your score and the decision as to whether you get credit or job or not.

To get a credit score you do have to pay is usually about $15 on average per bureau. So it makes sense to use a bureau that while I pull all three reports from one place and usually they'll give you a slight discount. For instance experience as a $40 or so charged to do all three reports for you with scores. They will also give your print out which explains the scores explains the negative items and explains how each impacts your credit score and how these items can impact your ability to obtain a loan and other things.

Once you get your credit report you should look for anything that is out of place. Just because something is not negative does not mean it's not erroneous or even fraudulent. If there is an account listed on your credit report that you do not recognize and do not know anything about you should immediately contact that credit bureau and get as much information as you can on it and find out what's going on. It may just be that the company or bank that you had an account with was bought out by another one or sold your account or loan to another company and they just renamed the loan under that.

Still it's good to be vigilant and be on the watch for any fraud with your credit reports. Now if you have negative information your credit report the general rule is that you need to fix it by paying off your accounts on time and to work out deals with creditors to make past due or otherwise negative accounts current. Yes, there are some slimy business tactics that are in use by fee driven credit fixing companies like spamming the credit bureaus with requests on valid negative information. Some bureaus have now gotten to the point where they will no longer accept continuous requests on items that are proven to be valid.

In the past the rule generally states that if a creditor cannot comply with information requests for proof on account within 30 days then it is dropped from your credit report. But the proud this is the banks or credit companies soon find out about this and put it right back on their with another couple weeks. In the past mortgage brokers in their credit fixing friends would constantly barrage the credit bureaus with these requests to remove negative information, even though it was temporary, just long enough for your's credit score to receive a boost you could get a house or get a loan. These practices are frowned upon and even though there are still used by fee charging credit fixers, they do not work as well as they used to and they should not be replied upon.

Now if you have negative items in your credit report that for some reason did not get removed when they were over and should have been removed then there is an easy method to get these items removed. There is certain rules as to how long different kind of negative information can want us or stay in your credit report and they vary by state. The general rule is seven years and a bankruptcy or other garnishment or judgment is 10 years to 14 years depending upon your state's rules and laws. To remove wrongful negative items you just have to either mail in a request in writing to each bureau that is affected by it and request that the items be removed as they are beyond the legal limits for reporting them.

Some credit bureaus like Experian will allow you to electronically file these requests through their website if you have purchased your credit report and score already through them. This can make it very easy and less time-consuming task and also gives you control number and a point of contact so you can make sure it is handled in a timely manner. Generally when done in this way negative items will be verified or removed within 2 to 3 weeks.

So there you have it how to remove harmful negative entries in your credit report, why you should check your credit report and even some methods, albeit a little shady, to remove even valid negative entries (albeit we do not recommend that you try and remove valid information from your credit report). Good luck and remember to always at least once a year check your credit reports with all three credit bureaus and if you find something wrong be sure and get it fixed.
