Kiva – And why a deeper look into this entrepreneurial and green phenomenon is called for

By now you have probably heard of Kiva, the auction-based-Charity-entrepreneurial approach to helping business people and locals in Third World and second world countries. Kiva has been featured in numerous news articles, magazines, talk shows and even on the major news channels. This kind of phenomenon in what it proposes that it does which is to give 100% of what people want to help people with too those that need it.

Prior to Kiva the number one charity that existed or that exists based on flow through which is the percentage of monies donated to end up going to those that need it was the Salvation Army with an over 80% flow through of donations. The Red Cross and United Way were found to have much lower flow through his in the 40% range and under. That meant that from every dollar that you give the Red Cross or the United Way only 40% best found its way to those in need whether they be in this country or another country. The rest of large percentage of that went to overinflated executive compensations, salaries, expensive trips, bonus packages, etc.

Kiva founder Matt Flannery proposed a new concept wherein similar to eBay one can auction the needed help for a business entity in a Third World country and people in the US and other virtual countries can actually bid on and participate in helping these people in these third world countries out. As of so far according to kiva press releases and news reports the auctions to flow through 100% of what people bid. But there's another factor here - Kiva is not funded by these auctions, they are instead funded by donations and investments.

So what that means is to determine if he really does have a one or percent flow through as a charity you would need to know the amount of those donations and investments in Kiva and you would need to know the salaries and compensation of its founders and other executives in the Corporation. Now Kiva looks like a great concept and a great idea and I hope it really does pass through this when some of these auctions to people in need in other countries and continues to do such. But I have one big problem and that is that this Kiva has been around for more than four years and any in-depth search on the Internet of any charity I can come up with executive compensation, salaries, and all sorts of financial information on the company.

I cannot find or locate anywhere the executive compensation for Mr. Flannery or other executives at Kiva. What amazes me is that Kiva has gotten more press than probably many large name charities like the Red Cross and others put together and not once have they ever answered the issue of executive compensation. Not once has that been brought to light. Instead it is either been sidestepped or avoided altogether. Now that makes me want to dig a little deeper before I go and become involved or donator go through auction on Kiva. You see him a little gun shy after having spent hours collecting donations for the Red Cross and UNICEF only to find that my time and the donations I collected mostly went to fruitless spending and outrageous executive compensation.

When it was first brought to light that the Red Cross and the United Way had some serious flow through an executive compensation and perks problems, it was sidestepped or avoided altogether. Only after the press finally got wind of the compensation abuses and more was ever finally brought to light. Some of these executives that were behind us were forced to leave or fired, and hopefully more scrutiny will be brought upon these charities in the future. I just think someone needs to look into the executive compensation (or planned future compensation like in the case of a startup) to see if Flannery and Kiva really are as green as they say there are.

I hope they are and I hope this is all just a misunderstanding and may be the question on executive compensation and other similar topics was just never asked correctly and was never brought to light. I just have to wonder about the motives of Mr. Flannery and Kiva when in such a high-profile concept like Kiva that they keep executive compensation and similar things completely secret. Is it that in the future they plan on putting ads like Google ads all over the website to make money off of the advertising and then sell it for a very high price like a few hundred million dollars or more? Or are they really the green minded people that they present themselves to be and it's not about the money and they're taking low salaries in their plan here is just to help people (that is how Habitat for Humanity was founded and it was and is a truly green charity that exists to help people and not to profit off of people). I just think this is an interesting topic for some newscaster or news reporter to go and dig a little deeper and hire a private detective or two and clear the air here because the necessary sources for information on Kiva that would determine exactly how green they really are is not publicly available as far as I can see.
