Craigslist fraud and crime and why it is getting worse and worse.

If you have used Craigslist lately you will notice that spam listings and scams are at an all time high.  In just a few minutes of perusing various Craigslist cities (Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago among others) I had found hundreds if not thousands of scams posted.  Some were very blatant like the one guy in New York that used the same picture to try and rent out an apartment for 5 listings in NY and then he had the same pictures for apartments in Chicago and one in Los Angeles.  Mail him the payment and he will mail you the keys - yeah, right!

Then you just go to the dating section and look at all the listings by prostitutes looking for Johns on there.  Are these people just stupid or is the bad economy so bad that it is making prostitutes desperate for some quick cash?  Don't these people know that recently a prostitute on Craigslist was killed and buried in a guy's backyard in NC?  It was a horrible crime, but what do you expect with Craigslist and the internet?  Do you really think that you will find nice and honest people on a place like Craigslist?  Why is it that police worldwide constantly search and look at listings and posts on Craigslist for finding and locating everything from criminals on the run (or lamb as it is often referred to) to child molesters, ponzi schemes (and almost every work at home or stuff envelopes from home ad is one of these), outright fraud (Nigerian schemes abound on Craigslist) to prostitution, libel and slander (look at the rant and rave section and there is always someone telling the world about their cheating boyfriend and their worst attributes or some similar call out that is definite slander and libel).

Yet, over 20 million people use this site everyday - that confounds me.  Why would you subscribe to or use a website that is so prevalent with fraud (according to the FBI, Craigslist is the only free classifieds website that exceeds the crime and fraud on Ebay - according to the FBI fraud on Ebay is at about a 50% level whereas on Craigslist it is well over 90%!)  What does that mean?  It means that you stand a very high and almost guaranteed chance of being a victim of fraud if you participate in using the various Craigslist websites.  The people you meet on there are not truthful about who they are, what they do, and if you are using the dating sections, what they look like.  According to the police in Los Angeles, "you respond to the ads with a beautiful picture and then when you arrange a meeting you find that the picture is not even close."

According to Craigslist they have upped their anti spam and anti scam technologies and methods.  According to Craigslist the levels of fruad and such are lower than 1 percent.  That's funny, Ebay owns part of Craigslist and they say their levels of fraud is less than 1 percent also.  They must be lending the same rose colored glasses to their buddies at Craigslist.  It's kind of funny that both camps (Ebay and Craigslist) use the same numbers in their denial of what is actually far higher rates of criminal activity and fraud.  Just to see what kind and amount of fraud exists on either of these websites just look them up (Google them) with fraud - ie. "Ebay fraud" or "Craigslist fraud" or better yet "Ebay crime" and "Craigslist crime"

It's funny that Craigslist states that they made it much harder for spammers to post their ads to hundreds of cities - when all it takes is for me to look up any popular section and at least half of the listings are spam like the same H2O for gas ads, Affiliate ads for skin care products that are currently listed as definite scams by the FTC, etc...  But you know what?  Just go to the rant and raves section in any large city and look at what you will find - some seriously deranged and hateful individuals.  The police in most every town or city would probably be able to thwart much crime if they focused more on tracking some of these posters.  I mean how many people publicly post things like you will find on there and are normal and not psycho - none!  I won't describe the things posted in there because you would just have to see for yourself - some of the people posting there are outright sick and demented.

Basically what I am saying here is Craigslist is in sad shape and one pathetic website.  The only value it has is the ability to make long posts and include lots of detailed pictures which is beneficial to selling a car or some similar item, but when freaks show up at your door that are determined to rob you, rape your wife and steal your car it definitely isn't worth it at all.  Use your head - the internet is full of scary and demented individuals.  It is no place to find a date or let your guard down.  There are many sick demented individuals out there and most of them share one thing in common - they use online dating and related chat rooms and websites and they use Craigslist.  Now, you've been duly warned and I've done my job.

I fully agree with you. Craigslist is a complete waste of time and there really are some strange and deranged people on there. One guy was trying to sell used and stained womens underwear on there. There are some sick people out there on Craigslist!
