Does Google Adwords affect your natural search ranking?

What do you think?  Google boldly states that this is not the case and that natural search is entirely separate from Google Adwords. 

 

Does Google Adwords have some factor in the Google natural search algorithms?  Maybe it factors into the authority behind websites and page rank?
I recently shut down my Adwords campaigns (as I got tired with the high levels of invalid clicks from competitors, bots and such) and within one week my ranking for keywords all went down 1 to 2 notches.


I was number one for most every conceivable keyword for my niche over a year and now am #2 or #3. And I by far have the most authoritative website, best content and most links in my respective niches.  No one even comes close.  

 

One could easily conclude that Google Adwords does have some slight effect on your natural search ranking and that if you end your Adwords campaigns it could jeopardize your rankings and traffic.  Maybe it has to do with a part of a websites credibility or authority?  Maybe it’s the slight drop in traffic on ending the Adwords campaigns.  Maybe its just coincidence, and maybe there was and still is some search engine flux going on left over from the last algorithm change.


What’s interesting to note here is that if you had a relatively large Adwords budget like mine, the fine folks at Google will call you daily to try and get you back - what's funny here is that after 1 week they stopped calling and immediately following this my rankings then all dropped 1 or two positions as stated above - I have to wonder if they did that so I would become concerned and call back or start my campaign back up.


All this time page rank (PR) has stayed the same and remains unaffected by this, though. What are your thoughts on this. Does Google Adwords really have an affect on natural search results?  Or is this all just a coincidence?
