Blogging 101 - How to make big money blogging online from home
By David Maillie
So how does one go about making a good income off the internet that can eventually replace their
Blogging has taken the internet by storm and as of 2007 Technorati (an internet search engine specifically for blogs) had over 100 million blogs in its records. That’s a lot of people with something to say. That includes everyone from family members with posts on family vacations to presidential hopefuls like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton with posts on their political views. Blogging is so vast you can find blogs on almost any subject you can think of from real estate investing to finances, money, business, golf, cars, etc…
Do you have cloudy, ugly and worn headlight lenses?
The power in blogging and why it is so popular is that they have made it possible for the average Joe to have a voice – and if they do it correctly a huge voice and to make some serious money off it as well. Bloggers have found that writers whom use unique content place higher in the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN control 99% of the organic search market) and are rewarded with good keyword rankings, placement and thusly traffic. Keep writing unique posts and updating continuously and it won’t be long before you have more readers than you know what to do with. Its interesting to note that unique content is king, but great (very interesting) unique content can bring virtual torrents and floods in traffic.
There are numerous web hosting and blogging companies that will provide you with everything you need sans an internet connection for free or very low cost. It is best to pay a little and get a real URL or blog name for your website. It is much better to have yourblog.com than blogger.yourblog.com as more people will find you and it looks much more professional. 95% of the bloggers with secondary domain names like blogger.yourblog.com never really make any moneywith their websites. Set yourself apart and register a unique root domain name like yourblog.com. Here’s a good hint – pick a crazy name that is easy to spell and not long. Google did this, so did Boing Boing and Yahoo. These are easy to remember names and they cannot be confused with others or generalities.
Next, once a blog has traffic flowing to it, to monetize this traffic a blogger has a few choices. They can run advertisements on it. Most Bloggers use Google adsense, Adbrite or a similar text ad to create revenue for their site. These advertising programs will run ads in certain spaces of each page or post and the blogger gets paid every time a reader clicks on an ad. The amount of pay ranges by keyword, percentage of click through and percentage charged by the advertising medium. Advertising, general takes a lot of posts and traffic to make money. The bloggers making millions with advertising have huge websites with millions of pages. For the average newbie it can take quite a while and many long days and sleepless nights of writing quality content for your website to get to the point where you have a decent return.
There are other ways to make money from your blog, however. One can become an affiliate for one or several companies. This is quite easy to do as you just sign up with an affiliate program and add a little html to your site. This will track users and keep a cookie on their computer to identify them and pay you a commission if they buy. Many cookies will actually stay with a customer from 30 to 90 days, so if they came to your website and looked at the offer, but didn’t buy and then come back and buy within those 30 to 90 days, you will get the credit and a commission. Commissions can range from a low of 5-10% with companies like Walmart and Target to 50% or higher with numerous ebook publishers. The point here is that you are helping to sell something and will most likely make more money per posts and pageviews than with advertising.
Next is another way to make money – sell something yourself. Yes, this makes more money per your readership – as long as you are selling something that goes along with your niche. Find something that would be great to sell to your readers – custom t-shirts, cups, automotive parts, Barbie dolls, your own line of dolls, etc… The basic rules here is simple – if you sell ads you will make on average $10 per 1000 unique page views. If you are an affiliate, depending on the products salability, you will on average make $1 to $3 or more per 100 unique page views. If you sell something you will, again on average, make $10 to $60 or more per 100 unique page views.

So, basically, it is true, you can make big money with a blog, it just takes some time and great, unique posts and content. The better the quality of your posts and content the bigger the draw you will have. There is also such a thing as monster content. That is the real gold. That is when an article or post you write goes ballistic due to its being unique, interesting and helpful. Readers will then link back and even tag it for social search engines like Digg, del.icio.us, care2 and others. Then you can get literally millions of visitors to your website. In the long run it helps to sell something as you will have a higher return and profit per reader or unique page view to your blog. Ads are a no brainer as you don’t have to worry about shipping items, chargebacks, etc…, but they pay the least percentage wise.

Great ideas. I have been thinking on starting a blog about college and students. Have any ideas? What about generic student activities and fund raisers? Fraternity and sorority events? BMOC? Etc...
