If you haven’t heard it or seen it yet, social media and “bookmarking” are taking the web by storm.  It used to be that to have an effective, money making site you could just add some content and then place some Google ads and you would do fine.  Then came SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and people were trying hard to straddle the line between white hat (good) SEO and black hat (bad) SEO.  The larger search engines were actively changing their algorithms to catch people violating and ruining the quality of searches just to place higher and get more traffic.  The search engines are still changing and altering their algorithms and yes, Google is still the best with somewhere around 80% of the total market share.  But, most importantly, what has evolved is a web where good, quality websites are ranked high and consumers and web searchers have a major input on this through the advent of social media and bookmarking. 

Basically, social mediums like Digg, Stumbled Upon, Del.icio.us, and others have forever changed and improved the web and search in general.  The idea behind social mediums is to create a forum where the audience (web searchers) determine what is great, good, boring and poor or bad.  If you visit Digg or Del.icio.us, for instance, you will find that anyone can join and post material or websites that they recommend.  Users will then rank these websites by voting (digging on Digg and saving as important on Del.icio.us).  Websites that are seen as spammy, generally worthless, etc… will be quickly weeded out and harshly at that – just read some of the comments on spammy posts!  Websites and material that are great and really useful will keep getting Dugg or voted, tagged, bookmarked, etc… and may place high enough to qualify for the front page. 

This is what everyone whom posts considers the holy grail of gorilla marketing – massive, free traffic.  Hitting the home or front page of a site like Del.icio.us or Dugg will usually result in tens of thousands of page views and unique visitors.  The traffic at times can get so high as to cause servers to crash and go off line similar to phone lines in hurricane affected areas after a hurricane.  Now, its important to note that most stuff will never make the front page of these websites.  But there is rewards for good websites and useful things like games, clever tools like SEO tools, unique tips and helpful content, etc… and if you have a website that can provide these you may not make the main page, but you will still get noted, linked to, tagged, blogged about, commented on, etc…

It is important to note that Digg, Del.icio.us, and Stumbled Upon (where users see random websites and vote yeah or neah on them similarly ranking the sites) are all huge, general social websites.  There are also numerous smaller niche social mediums like blogs, message boards and forums, wikis, MySpace, You Tube, Flickr, Care2, Facebook, etc…  Each of these has a certain target audience like MySpace is mostly made up of younger users and Care2 is a green or socially responsible version of Digg that focuses on health and environmental issues.  These smaller niches are rapidly growing and expanding and according to Google and numerous search Marketing experts is the wave of the future.  For most websites this is where the best opportunity is to be found and rewarded for providing a really useful and unique website.

According to Google the search parameters are changing and will favor vertical niche markets rather than broad horizontal markets.  People more and more search using more specific keywords.  For instance, if you search under the term dog and you are looking for natural dog treats you most likely will not find what you are looking for.  The more descriptive you get the better your results will be.  But, better than that is the social mediums where other users do the work for you and as a large group filter out the bad and spam and leave you with a group of really valuable websites you would never have found on your own.  Want to see this in action search for something on your favorite search engine and then do the same search on a social medium that caters to that topic or item and see what you will find.  Or just go to a niche social network like Care2.com and see what they have listed on the front page – great websites that users have voted on belong there.

Every social medium or network has its own die hard fans and users whom will tell you that theirs is best, but you have to get out their and try them yourself.  Find out which caters best to your needs and you will probably like several of them.  Be sure to not just be a user, participate and when you find a website, article, webpage, tool, etc… that you benefited from and that would benefit others post them to the various social mediums or networks.  It’s just like giving tips and helping people in public, you’re just doing it over the internet and you will have a larger impact.  What Digg, Del.icio.us, Stumbled Upon and others have done is created a place where the users (you, I and everyone else) has a chance to vote and count.  You can make the web a better place full of great websites ranked accordingly and great resources.  Unlike in politics where tricks, deceit and fraud can and are used to throw elections, in the social internet world you have a real voice and so does everyone else and cheating, deceit  deceit, spamming will not be tolerated and quickly removed.  The social has begun, as Microsoft states in their Zune software, “Welcome to the social.
