The Google minus 30 penalty
No one at the Google plex is talking about or admiting to this penalty, but the fact is it is happening right now and you cannot deny it when you move from page #1 to page #4 and stay there (not as a Google everflux adjustment that removes itself the next day or so). The good news is that it is in no way permanent. Just find the problem, fix it or remove it and then resubmit your website top Google. Then, as we've found, based upon your websites value and quality of content (for better websites this can be an overnight fix), Google will put you right back where you were prior to the penalty. In some cases you may even rank higher after the penalty.

The key here is to use Google analytics to confirm the penalty also you can do a search for your website under site:www.mywebsite.com and see how many pages you have indexed. A minus 30 penalty usually does not result in a loss of indexed pages. If you have also experienced a loss in indexed pages then there may be something more serious at play and it is best to check with Google analytics.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that Google is in a state of everflux since the latest revisions and changes to their algorithms and such occurred between April and June of this year. Many key websites have been bouncing back and forth and some terrible websites have attained key positions with poor content, quality and linking. This is due to the fact that there are some errors and Google is not perfect, but rest assured that Google is improving and these low quality sites will soon drop if they haven't already and the good sites will return stronger than before.
What is the key to the best standings and rankings?
Content is king, but you need good quality content. The web is overloaded with junk from article spammers whom write over 100 very poor articles per day. Whom wants to read something that has no useless information or helpful tips and just uses keywords to place high? Thats right, no one and the serps like Google are monitoring traffic interest in your sites and pages and if you have bad or dull content you will be penalized for it.

On the other hand, if you have excellent content that captures your readers and makes them want to forward your website to their friends, pass it around and even link to it (link bait) you will win in the end. This is how Google envisions the web. Also make sure your content is unique and does not copy or duplicate anyone else. Keep this up and avoid black hat and even grey hat techniques (like linking to your own websites with same or similar pages and websites to falsely gain rank (ie. tcapeel.net and bettercomplexions.com (both owned by the same persons), and anais.citymax.com and mytcapeel.com (both owned by the same persons) - both of these groups currently use grey hat similar website linking to wrongly gain rank in the serps). Black hat techniques are currently sought and penalized by Google (some more than others). Grey hat techniques will soon be penalized also per Google (as per there do no harm and don't cheat policy).
Good luck with your websites and ranking. Refrain from black and grey hat techniques, stick to providing quality and unique content and you will win in the end!

Yes, you are right. I looked up your examples of grey hat websites and the sites bettercomplexions.com and tcapeel.net do link to one another and are owned by the same people. I found that out by looking the websites up under domain lookup. Also, by looking at the websites they appear to be rather scammy - has someone reported them to Google yet? As Google supposedely does not want any (gray or black hat) manipulation of their search engines. I wonder what Google has to say about this?

I unfortunately have dealt with those same people before - they also sell thousands and thousands of chemical peel kits on Ebay under the usernames bettercomplexions, hollywood_calif and now hollywood_calif1. They are very deceptive and have a history of changing their usernames often (probably to throw off the authorities). I checked them out and its easy to tell once you do a domain lookup and compare this to their listings and Ebay information. They use fake doctors licenses and diplomas on many of their listings and claim their products (skin and chemical peels) are from a licensed plastic surgeon - none of this is true. This is a scam that must be avoided. I have personally called the Department of health and medical boards in both California and Oregon (states they live in) and they checked them out and found their claims to be completely false (no doctor or license or anything and their behavior both deceptive and illegal). If you have bought from them please do not use the products and call their states medical board (California and Oregon), department of health and FDA for more information and especially if you've had a bad reaction to any of their products).
